Which Window Treatments Help With Privacy the Most?

Salt Lake City privacy shutters

Your home is your sanctuary, and if you think like most homeowners, finding Salt Lake City window treatments that give you privacy and sound control to maintain your sanctuary is a concern. Any window covering is better than an uncovered window. However there are some window treatments that add more privacy than others, even on specialty windows.

Improving Privacy on Non-Square Windows

Most large, standard windows you have are simple to cover with just about any window treatment such as blinds, shades, or shutters in Salt Lake City.

You might encounter some situations when you need a specific style of window treatment to provide adequate privacy and light control. These include:

  • Bathroom windows where excess moisture might damage fabric window treatments.

  • Sidelight windows that are tall and thin on which window treatments can be pushed around by the door’s movement.

  • Non-square windows such as eyebrows, circular windows, bow windows, etc., where normal rectangular blinds and curtains can’t cover your window without hiding the window’s unique shape.

  • Large windows that are hard to reach such as second-story foyer windows.

In these cases, you’ll need window treatments that go above and beyond to provide privacy to your space.

As a plus, shop around for window treatments that offer good sound control to keep outside noises outside and keep inside noise inside.

The Best Window Treatments for Privacy

The most privacy-friendly window treatment we recommend are Polywood® plantation shutters. Plantation shutters are able to fully close, for when complete privacy and sound control is what you need. If you want to let light in and see outdoors, just tilt the louvers. For tall or high windows, you should keep the louvers tilted at an angle to let light in while still protecting your privacy.

Indoor shutters are also great for non-rectangular windows because they’re custom built to your exact dimensions. And since Polywood shutters are waterproof, they’re perfect for bathrooms.

Another privacy-friendly window treatment is roller shades. Roller shades take up minimal space at the top of the window, but are easy to pull down to prevent any views from outside your home. While they can’t be custom-fit to fit unique window shapes, you can find roller shapes made from moisture-resistant material for areas such as the kitchen or bathroom.

Window Treatments that Don’t Protect Your Privacy

While any window covering offers a basic level of privacy, there are a few that might not get the job done. The first is sheer curtains. Sheer curtains used to be popular a while back and can add a a breezy feeling to a room. However they’re fairly translucent and can be seen through fairly easily, especially when it’s dark out.

Another product we don’t recommend for privacy are cheap or bulky blinds, which can break and/or get stuck at an angle. If you can’t completely shut the blinds due to breakage, then they’re not helping keeping your home private.
