Plantation shutters in Salt Lake City are usually priced by the square foot, so if you’re looking for a rough measurement for a price estimate, simply measure your window height and width, to the nearest eighth of an inch.

Measuring Square & Rectangular Windows for Shutters

Typical rectangular windows sound like the easiest ones to measure – and they are, compared to other window shapes. But there’s still an entire process that goes into getting accurate measurements. Here’s the process.

What You’ll Need:

  • Tape measure

  • Pencil and paper

Starting off, measure the width (horizontal). Get a measurement across in three separate spots: close to the exact center, near the top, and close to the bottom of the window. Mark down all three, to the nearest eighth of an inch. After that, do the same for the length (the bottom-to-top) – get three measurements, one in the center, and one near either edge of the window as seen in this illustration.

Why do you need to measure three times each? Simply because no window is a truly perfect rectangle. And depending on what kind of mount your shutters will need, you might either need to record the smallest measurement (for an inside mount), or the largest measurement (outside mount). Taking measurements in three spots makes sure your bases are covered.

How to Measure Specialty Shaped Windows for Shutters

Non-square windows are the tricky ones to measure. Just as there’s no such thing as a perfectly square window, there’s no such thing as a perfect semicircle or arch window – and that means that taking the right measurements can be problematic. If you want the best results, get a professional measurement (which Sunburst Shutters Salt Lake City is happy to do for no cost). Other than that, these are the steps to measure most types of specialty windows for shutters.

How to Measure Arched and Semicircle Windows for Shutters

Start by measuring the width on the window’s flat bottom. Measuring only the window opening, record to the closest eighth of an inch the width of the arch. Moving on to the height, find the halfway point of the window by dividing the width distance in two, then measure to the top of the window from the point you found. Again, write it down to the closest eighth of an inch.

How to Measure Elongated Arch Windows for Shutters

Elongated arch windows look like a combination of a circular or square, with a flat, wide bottom and vertical “legs,” but with rounded corners at the top and a higher arch. So attack it exactly as that: a square and an arch combined. Get the width measurement as you would a normal arched window, then record the height of the legs (the straight vertical parts before the window curves). Last, measure the window’s maximum height from the middle of the width, subtracting the height of the legs. Again, record all of these to the nearest eighth of an inch.

Measuring Octagon and Circular Windows

Octagonal and circular windows are some of the trickiest to measure, as there are so many tiny aspects that can change the shutter dimensions your window might need. We strongly recommend leaving these windows to a professional.
