Choosing Casement Window Treatments in Salt Lake City

Matt Thelander

Finding the perfect window treatment solution for Salt Lake City homes is probably the best part of working in interior design and fashion. And few types of windows offer the same design challenge as do casement windows. Unlike normal sliding windows, casement windows are hinged on one or more sides, and so they swing in or out to operate.

Because they work differently from most other windows, they require a slightly different approach when choosing the perfect window treatment. Let’s take a look at how to find a great casement window treatment.

Casement Window Treatment Priorities

When choosing a window treatment for your swinging window, be sure to keep these priorities in mind.

  • Ease of use - Whether your casement window opens and shuts via crank or lever, you should be able to easily open and shut your window without the annoyance of a window treatment getting in the way.

  • Ability to fit your window depth - Various casement windows will have varying depths between the wall and the window itself, so some window treatments may be too deep for the space.

  • Coverage - Unlike sliding windows which usually can only open partially, nearly all casement windows will be able to open all the way. That range of light control will let you achieve an ideal amount of light without sacrificing the great ventilation that casements give you.

Recommended Casement Window Treatment Options

So what’s the best window covering for Salt Lake City casement windows? Since there can be some differences between various casement windows (hinge position, window jamb depth, and so forth), it’s a good idea to schedule an in-home consultation so a window treatment professional can help you find your own best fit.

That being said, here are the window treatment options we typically recommend for casement windows.

Plantation Shutters

There is no going wrong with plantation shutters on casement windows. Whether a casement swings from the top (known as an “awning”), the bottom (a “hopper”), or from the sides, plantation shutters can be custom-made to match the direction your window operated. That also makes certain that your shutters won’t impede the opening mechanism, whether it’s by crank or lever, and can fit perfectly into your window jamb or off of them so the depth of your window isn’t an issue.

Shutters can be put in around the opening of the window to ensure full operation of the opening mechanism. Furthermore, you don’t have to worry about suspended material blowing in the wind or being left exposed when you want your window open.

Finally, shutters open up a whole new world of coverage options for your window. Say you need to circulate a lot of fresh air into your house, but don’t want a lot of light. Just open your casement window, but set your shutter louvers slightly open so that you can your perfect level of fresh air and light. That amount of control is only offered by plantation shutters.

Shades

A more basic option than shutters, shades offer chic looks and an effective framing to your window, without getting in the way of the casement opening mechanism. Because shades are always installed over the frame, there’s no need to consider the direction the window opens or the window depth. Shades can simply be drawn to the top when the window opens, so your view and airflow stay unobstructed.
